In this volume, we follow the itinerary of Jesus from September 29 CE when he fed 5000 men, in addition to an unknown number of women and children, until his ascent to Jerusalem in March the following year, when he raised Lazarus from the dead. There is a gap of five months in the gospels of Matthew and Mark between October 29 and March 30 CE. If it were not for the Gospel of Luke, which records Jesus’ ministry from beginning to end, we would neither have known what Jesus said and did during these five months nor that he spent two months down in the Jordan Valley during his last winter. Except for what happened during his last Passover in Jerusalem, which is recorded in all the four gospels, Matthew and Mark never mention what Jesus did outside of Galilee, and with a few exceptions Lazarus only records what Jesus said and did during the five religious festivals which Jesus attended in Jerusalem. This is not surprising since Lazarus lived in Bethany right outside of the capital with his two sisters and was Jesus’ host during his visits to the city. Jesus’ first appearance in Jerusalem after the beginning of his earthly ministry was during Passover in April 29 CE, and his next visit was at Pentecost about seven weeks later. What Jesus said and did during these two festivals has been covered in Volume IV in this series. In this volume, we will see that Jesus arrived in Jerusalem in October 29 CE to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles, and then again in December for the Feast of Dedication. A close reading of Luke shows that Jesus, after having spent the winter in the Jordan Valley, went back to Galilee to see his family one last time before he ascended to Jerusalem to be crucified.
